There are no 1st, 2nd and 3rd Place Winners for this running. All those judging the contest agreed that, regretably, no entry captured the Dreamcatcher spirit as described below.

No entry pushed the boundaries of narrative film making in the way this contest has been established to inspire. And, as much as we would like things to be otherwise, Cloud Creek Institute For The Arts determined from the very inception of this contest that there would be no "grading on the curve." The very concept is, unfortunately, anathema to the purpose of this contest.

Cloud Creek Institute For The Arts would like to express our thanks to all those who entered, and all who volunteered to serve as judges.

We are going back to the drawing board to determine what went wrong with our approach to the goal of "improving the breed" when it comes to film and video and hope to continue running this contest in a way that can produce both a winner and a new paradigm in film making.

More Information about the First Running of the Dreamcatcher Short Film Contest is below:

The purpose of the Dreamcatcher Short Film Contest is to move mainstream narrative film out of its current moribund, "same-old, same-old" state and return excitement and artistry to the "big screen." The same tired, tried-and-true stories and shooting and editing techniques have dominated narrative film (and television) for over twenty years, so much so that we find "serious" film makers saying things like, "We have perfected the crime [or law or love] story."

From the perspective of Cloud Creek Institute For The Arts "perfection" is far from what "we" have here. Because of the reliance on aging methods of creation and approaches most contemporary film seems stale, bloodless and impersonal. It lacks a point of view. It lacks theme and substance. It lacks emotional impact. Indeed, much of the work currently available in theaters lacks emotional veracity of any kind, with stories that too often seem to have no genuine human connection.

Because of this our goal is to encourage a more experimental and artistic approach to narrative film-making. Worldwide, the non-narrative experimental film situation is blossoming, with top museums presenting exciting new visual displays in such fields as video and film poetry. Cloud Creek Institute For The Arts believes that for narrative film to regain its vitalilty and begin growing again the "language" of experimental non-narrative film must be applied to it. Innovation is essential, and innovation is precisely what the Dreamcatcher Short Film Contest will reward.

The Dreamcatcher Short Film Contest is open to film makers from anywhere. Entries may have originally been shot on either film or video and must be no more than 5 minutes in length. The First Annual Dreamcatcher opened for entries April 15, 2004 and closed May 15, 2005.
